Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), an ISO 9001: 2015 Company is a premier Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) shipyard in India, specializing in the construction and repair of warships, submarines, and offshore structures for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard. Established in 1774 and operating as a public limited company under the Ministry of Defence since 1960, MDL has transformed into a critical player in India’s indigenization efforts, famously known as the “shipbuilder to the nation”. Strategic Importance: MDL is the only Indian shipyard to have built destroyers and conventional submarines for the Indian Navy. It has played a pivotal role in constructing significant naval platforms, including the Kolkata-class destroyers, Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, Shivalik-class stealth frigates, and Kalvari-class diesel-electric submarines. Production & Capabilities: The shipyard has built over 807 vessels, including 32 capital warships and eight submarines. It is equipped to construct advanced destroyers and submarines, boasting a capacity to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously, including 11 submarines and 10 warships. Modernization & Expansion:MDL has expanded its infrastructure through projects like the “Mazdock Modernization Project” and is currently developing a new facility with a larger dry dock to accommodate larger naval vessels. It is also expanding into merchant shipbuilding and has acquired a 51% stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC to grow its repair business.
